Energy efficiency for buildings and industry
Use less energy smarter and limit the energy footprint
This Strategic Focus Area encompasses all segments of the energy efficiency market (buildings, industry, industrial processes). The overall objective is to promote the most efficient systems without compromising on production yields, comfort, or greenhouse gas emissions.
Tenerrdis’ 2022 objectives
Tenerrdis aims to demonstrate, through collaborative R&D projects, the feasibility of massive rollout of energy efficiency solutions.
key challenges adressed by tenerrdis
Buildings/construction
- Construction processes and, especially, the need for new, more energy-efficient design, production, and maintenance processes, as well as the need to factor in the local environment, crucial to fighting localized hotspots and taking full advantage of the potential for solar energy, particularly in urban areas.
- The carbon footprint throughout the building’s lifecycle, the renovation of existing buildings, and the massive rollout of solutions that leverage solutions already financed and implemented on a small scale.
- Collaborative robotics, additive construction, and digital technology to speed up and facilitate the use of low-carbon materials, products, and technical solutions.
- Service quality, with a focus on health, comfort, and wellness at home and at work.
Industry
- Measurement and verification using digital tools to calculate the savings generated by energy-performance initiatives.
- Feedback, to meet industrial companies’ need for information on best practices and innovations.
- Prototypes/demonstrator systems to promote energy efficiency for industry
well-established public policies
EU Directives
In the building/construction and industrial sectors, the principal energy efficiency and renewable energy targets for the coming years have been set forth in EU legislation like the Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and, recently, Energy Performance of Buildings Directives. These directives all aim to reduce carbon emissions by curbing consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy, recovering waste energy, and choosing more energy-efficient materials and systems. For buildings in particular, the main challenges will be renovating existing buildings and fighting energy poverty/vulnerability. What is new is interaction between buildings and their environment—and, especially, the electricity grid—and electric mobility. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive introduces a new Smart Readiness Indicator to assess a building’s capacity to improve operation and interaction with the grid by aligning consumption with occupants’ actual needs.

France
In France, the Energy Transition for Sustainable Growth Act identifies the renovation of existing buildings as a top priority, and a national building energy renovation plan has been established. For new builds, the guidelines are those in the RT2012 thermal energy performance regulation—expected to be upgraded to an energy and environment regulation in 2020—following the E+C project. For industry, an EU Directive enforced under the DDADUE Act in France requires industrial companies with more than 250 employees to conduct an energy audit every four years or to implement an ISO 50001-certified energy efficiency program. Lastly, this Strategic Focus Area addresses one of the four major challenges identified by the National Council for Industry’s working groups on New Energy Systems.
project focus
Tenerrdis is committed to cataloguing projects completed in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region and helping gather and share feedback from projects among its members. Two of Tenerrdis’ flagship projects are Moovabat, a project to design and build a high-tech, energy-efficient, versatile, “living” building prototype, and Myriade, to develop a multi-energy, multi-purpose energy harvesting system for multi-family residential and commercial buildings.
